Urban Dictionary + Internet Explorer! WTF !!!!

Look what it shows if you do a search with the keyword: internet explorer on www.urbandictionary.com. I had an awesome laugh.

  1. A simple Windows XP tool which allows the user to browse to Mozilla.com and download Firefox, a web browser.
As soon as I installed XP I opened Internet Explorer and grabbed the latest version of Firefox.
  2. Microsoft’s pre-installed, default internet browser for Windows. Has to be the worst browser on earth, because its only features are free viruses, automatic spyware downloads, and awesome security holes. The best part about Internet Explorer is that it forced companies, such as Mozilla and Opera, to make their own browsers, which completely and utterly blow Internet Explorer out of the water.

    Download Opera/Mozilla plz.
“Internet Explorer installed spyware on my machine again :\.”

  3. One of the most amazing tools for downloading Firefox
I used Internet Explorer to download Firefox. One of the only uses of this crappy browser.
  4. 1) The greatest browser in the world. No other browser can download Mozilla FireFox like Internet Explorer.
    1) As soon as I turned on my brand new Alienware PC, I fired up Internet Explorer so I could download Mozilla FireFox.
  5. The crappiest browser on earth. Comes complete with security holes, shitty standards support, and no features. A favorite of ignorant internet users everywhere.Get Mozilla.
Internet Explorer is a steaming mound of poo.
  6. A browser that while popular, has many security holes. It also has poor support of today’s standards, and has a dangerous feature called ActiveX that can be used to install programs harmful to computers.
Still using Internet Explorer? I suggest switching to a Mozilla-based browser, Opera, or another alternate browser.
  7. Microsoft’s attempt to dominate the Internet by integrating this poor excuse of a browser with every Windows OS, although this was deemed illegal, they made some bullshit up about it being a core part of Windows. So in the end, they integrated this POS into Windows.IE is buggy, has many security holes, is slow, supports ActiveX so websites can install their XXX dialers on our systems, and finally, it’s not standards compliant, so 80%+ web pages have sloppy HTML which doesn’t work with standards compliant browsers, only IE. How convenient.
Internet Explorer is the most COMMON browser, but NOT the most popular.

Let’s show Microsoft what a piece of crap browser he has !!!

Tomorrow is an special day, is the day our beloved Firefox 3 is released, and all the browser lovers, are willing to see this every day tool to be used more than Internet Explorer which is a shame and the most hated software out there, I can bet; so tomorrow, let’s take 3 minutes, to download and install this browser, every download counts. Mozilla, the peoples behind Firefox, are trying to make a Guinness record, the software most downloaded in 24 hr, u can check all the information here:

http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord

So peoples, let’s do it.

Let’s show Microsoft, that he can take that piece of crap browser and introduce it where the back lose his name.

If Internet Explorer were a car

I just wondered what it would be like if there were a car that behaved like
Internet Explorer.

  • You’ll find it one morning in your driveway, and there is no way of removing it.
  • The engine starts as soon as you approach it, which is a bit odd, but it seems to run smoothly enough not to pose a threat.
  • Everybody else seems to drive the same car, so you give it a spin.
  • It is pretty enjoyable to use - dead easy really. For example you don’t have to hit the gas pedal properly to accelerate, just putting your foot in the general surrounding is enough.
  • It does swerve a bit in the bends and newer roads are a really bumpy ride, but that is a minor problem, surely whoever builds these cars must be working on that.
  • For some reason, the roof leaks and when you ask others what can be done against that they advise you to wear a thick jacket made from a waterproof material. The best seems to be Symantex™.
  • There is plenty of parking space around the area, but somehow all parking lots have advertising signs blocking the way. You are advised to get a CowCatcherXP2™ to get rid of those.
  • After driving in some dark alleys a part of the windscreen shows advertisements for gambling arcades at random intervals. To get rid of those, you are advised to get a SpotwareRemoverTowel™. It takes some time and several attempts to get rid of the stains, but that is perfectly normal.
  • From time to time you get overtaken by faster cars playing classical music, and smooth moving ones (even on the newer roads) with foxtails on the rear-view mirror. They do look flash, but why bother? The drivers seem to be weirdoes.
  • On closer inspection, you see they attached things to their cars that make them a lot more comfortable to use. They tell you to get them in “extension shops” where the things are given away for free. When you ask for some, the shop tells you that you need to pay.
  • If you park the car in your garage and close the door to work on it you’ll get a message that you really should be on the road to make repairs.
  • If you try to change the colour of your car and fit nicer seats you realise that the paint never really covers all and the seats only fit when you fix them with a lot of adhesive tape. On the other hand it is really easy to change the colour of the tires and make the license plate fade in and out.

I Don’t Think So

“We are encouraging site administrators to get their sites ready now for broad adoption of Internet Explorer 8, as there will be a beta release in the third quarter of this year targeted for all consumers.” Yeah, like this happened with IE7 who still trails behind IE6, unless of course they forced the update on everybody in which case: “a call to action for site owners to ensure their content will continue to display seamlessly in Internet Explorer 8.”

Wow Microsoft, like I didn’t waste enough time to make my websites work in your stupid browsers, now I have to go back to all of them so I can make them work in your stupid IE8 release?

Seriously, I don’t think so. Maybe the ” ideal of write once, run anywhere” should’ve been considered early in the game? Some time between IE5 and IE6.

Standards & Martians

Following in the same line as our post: The Microsoft Way Of Thinking we found this article about Martians Headsets that elaborates on why it is important to follow standards.

The article is lengthy and a little weird, it uses Martian lingo like: Qxyzrhjjjjukltk, but it is worth a read to understand more the damage that IE has done by not following standards.

Firefox 3 ready for public.

Firefox 3 Beta 4 has been released, and is now available for download. test

This is a list of CSS improvements for Firefox 3:

What can i say about the improved performace:

  • Reliability. Firefox 3 now stores bookmarks, history, cookies, and preferences in a transactionally secure database format. This means your data is protected against loss even if your system crashes.
  • Speed. Firefox 3 has gotten a performance boost by completely replacing the part of the software that handles drawing to your screen, as well as to how page layout work is handled.
  • Memory use reduced. Firefox 3 is more memory efficient than ever, with over 300 memory “leak” bugs fixed and new features to help automatically locate and dispose of leaked memory blocks.

And so much more. I think that this time, Microsoft’s IE is going down. The numbers of Firefox download are increasing. Even my mom is using Firefox.

Is still a beta. but can’t wait till is ready, i’m already using it. :D

Two tweak tools that will make our life easier with IE7

Here i bring you two tweak tools that will help us customize a little, that evil IE7.

One will allow us to remove the search bar from the upper right of the browser; two options either messing with the registry following the explanation on this link:

http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2006/12/remove-search-bar-from-ie-7.html

or downloading a simple application the guys from IntelliAdmin has created, on the download section of the previous link.

The second one will tweak IE7 in diferent ways, like showing or hiding different bars on the evil browser. Two ways again, messing with the registry following the instructions or installing a well created applications developed by the same guys here:

http://www.intelliadmin.com/blog/2007/01/tweak-your-ie-7-settings.html

This will make our life easier and i do want to thank them for this.

Don’t forget to check their download section for others tweak tools for Windows and company, here:

http://www.intelliadmin.com/Downloads.htm

PD: And if any of them are reading this post, i will like to tell them, that i share the same frustration they have using Windows Vista. I’m this close to throw my PC into my backyard lake.

New Meta Tag?

Microsoft has done it again (technically they haven’t done it yet but they will with IE8). Microsoft has, again, invented new tags for their browser. On this occasion I’m only going to talk about the META tag developers will need to use to let IE8 know that it should render the page under IE8 standards.

So what is this META tag anyways and what does it do? To make put really simple, it tells IE how to render a website, as IE7 or as the more standard compliant IE8. At first you may seem confused as in why would you need to tell the browser which version to use. After all, a browser should be complaint from the beginning or at lest offer backward compatibility meaning that it should understand the hacks you had to use to make it work in it’s previous version.

But what’s really baffling is that IE8 is setting a precedent that may become a nightmare for web developers as new versions are created. According to this article Microsoft may be thinking that by letting developers choose which version their pages will render, it will assure that their websites won’t break on newer versions. But, why should a new browser version break a website that is already working? If you are IE, the answer is simple: Complete disregard for Web Standards.

So the point we are trying to make here is that the META tag approach is the wrong approach and it should be seen as another attempt by Microsoft into doing whatever they want and bullying everybody else into following. For starters, if they had committed to develop a standard compliant browser from the first place, we wouldn’t be in this mess.

A Simple Browser Comparisson

This link does a good job of illustrating the differences between browsers:

http://operawatch.com/news/2007/09/opera-vs-firefox-vs-internet-explorer-picture.html

If you are still using Internet Explorer please join us on 2008:

Note: It’s funny, but Apple makes a better browser for Windows than Microsoft.

Let’s Follow Opera

And sue Microsoft for damages because of all the time, money & sanity it has made us waste trying to get our websites to work on it’s stupid browser which, as it comes standard on any PC, is the most used browser in the world.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071213-opera-tries-to-force-ie-into-w3c-compliance-with-eu-complaint-firefoxs-success-may-work-against-it.html

* Update:

Here’s microsoft response to Opera’s antitrust:

” Microsoft has officially responded to the antitrust complaint filed by Opera yesterday with the European Commission. The software giant’s key point: there are plenty of readily-available choices for Windows users looking for a browser other than Internet Explorer, and there’s nothing forcing anyone to surf with a browser he or she doesn’t like.”

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071216-microsoft-plethora-of-browsers-no-basis-for-opera-gripes.html?rel

While the above statement is true and users can actually use another browser, like I do, the common user doesn’t have any idea on how to do this. Let’s face it, most users think IE is the Internet and when you try to explain the concept of browsers to them they stare at you with a “what the hell are you talking about” face. And elaborating on this, it is a nice thing that Microsoft includes a browser so people can browse the web without having to get a CD (since you wouldn’t be able to download a browser). Mac does the same thing but the key difference is that Safari is a complaint browser while IE is not.

And well, since Microsoft said it: “here’s nothing forcing anyone to surf with a browser he or she doesn’t like.” we at this blog will make sure to have more instructions and reasons for people to change so that they don’t have to expereince the web in a crappy browser and we, the developers, don’t have to resort to crazy hacks to make our websites work on badly developed products.
